Your credit score (FICO score) is your private business. No one should know more about your private business than you do. So, find out your credit score, and check it every 6 to 12 months.

Get both (your score and your report) in written form directly from the credit bureaus **. The cost to order a credit report/score is minimal—ranging from free to less than $20.

Credit Problems

Unfortunately, many people do not find out that they have strikes against their credit until they apply to purchase a big ticket item. Have you ever applied for credit thinking, "No problem," only to be declined? If so, you know how embarrassing that is. Keeping up with your credit score will help you avoid having to find out too late that you have strikes against your credit.

Your Credit Score

There are at least four good reasons for keeping up with your credit score:

1. We just established that knowing your credit score can help you avoid embarrassment when applying for credit to make big ticket purchases.

2. If you keep up with your credit score, you will be able to recognize immediately if errors show up on it.

3. You will be able to spot fraudulent charges. Identity theft is becoming more and more common.

4. Having your credit scores checked by a loan institution can cause a "ding" against your credit. So when you are in the market to buy or refinance a home, your loan officer will not have to check your credit score because you will already know it and have your credit score and your credit report in writing.
